Abstract

A fertilizer comprises the fermentation residue from the manufacture of antibiotics, that is, the solid product remaining after the fermentation liquid containing the antibiotic has been separated by decantation, centrifuging or filtration, mixed with sphagnum (peat moss) the whole being subjected to fermentation in heaps, the size of which is preferably adjusted so that the temperature of fermentation initially rises to 20-60 DEG C., after which the temperature decreases as fermentation diminishes. The peat (dry solids content 75 per cent) may be mixed with the fermentation refuse (dry solids content 24 per cent) in the ratio of 1 to 1 up to 1 to 13 or higher and the moisture content of the final mixture may be controlled by adding fermentation refuse, fermenting, drying, adding further fermentation refuse and repeating the process until the dry solids content is from 50-70 per cent.
