Abstract
Regenerated cellulose filaments and fibres are obtained by a two-stage spinning process which comprises extruding viscose into an aqueous coagulating bath having a pH of 1.5 to 10 and containing sodium sulphate and inorganic phosphate radicals, at least some of which are in the form of a sodium salt, withdrawing the xanthate filaments thus formed, passing them through an aqueous cellulose-regenerating bath containing an equilibrium mixture of sodium sulphate and phosphoric acid and also sulphuric acid to convert at least part of the phosphate salts carried over by the filaments to phosphoric acid, stretching the filaments between the coagulation and complete regeneration operations, continuously passing at least a portion of excess regenerating bath which builds up during spinning to the coagulating bath, withdrawing a portion of the coagulating bath and removing therefrom, by evaporation and crystallization, water and sodium sulphate, and maintaining the composition of the coagulating bath substantially constant by the addition of predetermined amounts of sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid from a source other than the regenerating bath. In effect, it is the sulphuric acid that is consumed for the neutralization of virtually all the sodium hydroxide in the viscose, the phosphate radicals serving to dehydrate the viscose stream and as a vehicle to carry hydrogen ions to the stream for neutralizing the sodium hydroxide. There is substantially no loss of phosphate radicals. The filaments may be stretched between the coagulating and regenerating baths and relaxed in the regenerating bath. Alternatively they may be stretched in the regenerating bath. Crimped filaments may be obtained by employing a high jet velocity-draw-off ratio.
