700,194. Coated bonded glass fibre material. FIBREGLASS, Ltd. Feb. 21, 1952 [March 21, 1951], No. 6745/51. Class 140 A flexible sheet material, suitable for a ground covering for temporary aircraft landing strips, consists of a primary layer of bonded glass fibres, a coating of polyvinyl chloride on both sides of the primary, layer, and an outer coating of bitumen on each side of the coated primary layer. Heterogeneously arranged glass fibres may be bonded with a 10-20 per cent. of a mixture of starch and phenol-formaldehyde resin to form a tissue 0.25 mm. thick. The tissue is coated on both sides with polyvinyl chloride, either from a bath of emulsion or solution with subsequent drying and heating by heated rollers, or by knife coating with a paste of polyvinyl chloride mixed with a non- volatile plasticizer, to form a coating about 8 times the primary layer weight giving a sheet thickness 0.5 mm. A knife coating of oxidized asphaltic bitumen of melting point 82‹ C., which may be loaded with slate flour, is then applied to each side to bring the sheet to 2.2 mm. thickness.
