Abstract

700,163. Cable joints. SUBMARINE CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 4, 1950 [Oct. 4, 1949], No. 25532/49. Class 38 (1). A seal for a submarine cable repeater housing is provided by a body 1 of resilient plastic material, e.g. polythene, inserted and cemented in the throat between converging metal surfaces 2, 3 of the housing R and a bulkhead B, respectively. The bulkhead abuts a shoulder S on the housing and the plastic body is pressed by a backing ring 5 acted upon by set-screws 8 threaded in a retaining ring 7 screwing into the housing at 4. The cement used preferably is polyisobutylene. In a modification, Fig. 2, (not shown) the body is in two parts, one of which is cemented to each of the surfaces 2, 3 and after assembly of the bulkhead to the housing, the body parts are welded together by a nitrogen gun, the backing ring being dispensed with. The seal is suitable for housings described in Specifications 643,550 and 700,457.
