Class 146(1) A loose leaf binder comprises two plates each provided with a plurality of curved prongs adapted to form retaining rings either when the two plates are placed alongside each other with one of the plates fixed inside the back of the binder, or-when the two plates are placed alongside a third plate fixed inside the back of the binder, in each case the fixed plate being connected to the other plate or to each of the two plates by a set of equi-length parallel links pivotally connected at their ends to the plates so that the plates have relative movement in the same plane to open or close the prongs. As shown in Figs. 3 and 8, two plates 5, 6 each have a series of curved prongs 3, 4, the plates being interconnected by parallel links 7 and the plate 6 being secured to the back 1 of a binder having covers 2. In Fig. 3, the prongs 3, 4 are singly disposed and a stop 9 is provided on each plate to limit the movement, but in Fig. 8 the prongs 3, 4 are disposed in pairs at such distance apart that the prongs 3, 4 may connect in the position shown, for transferring overlapping papers 8, when the plates 5, 6 are swung into a second touching position with the links 7 passing over the position perpendicular to the plates. As shown in Fig. 9, two plates 5, 5a are provided with the prongs 3, 4 and are connected by pivoted links 7, 7a to the plate 6 secured to the binder back 1, the lengths of the links 7, 7a being arranged so that movement of plate 5a to the second touching position will connect the prongs 3, 4 next to each other, whereas movement of the plate 5 will connect the prongs two apart and simultaneous movement will connect the prongs three apart. Other length links for different distances of shift may be provided. The prongs 3, 4 may be separate and secured to the plates 5, 6 as shown in Fig. 3, or may be made integral therewith and curved as by stamping. When the prongs have only one position of connection, as in Fig. 3, they may have interconnecting positions as shown, or connecting curves.
