Abstract

Lime refractories are prepared by forming a substantially anhydrous slip of calcium oxide powder in a lower aliphatic alcohol e.g. one having up to 4 carbon atoms, casting the slip into a porous mould and firing, after evaporation of the alcohol and before any appreciable hydration occurs, to sinter the oxide in substantially water vapour face conditions. In a modification, the oxide is deposited from the slip by cataphoresis on to a support. Refining prevents hydration.ALSO:Refractories are prepared by forming a substantially anhydrous slip of calcium oxide powder in a lower aliphatic alcohol, casting the slip in a porous mould and firing, after evaporation of the alcohol and before any appreciable hydration of the oxide occurs, to sinter the oxide in substantially water vapour free conditions. In a modification, the oxide is deposited from the slip by cataphoresis on to a support e.g. on to the inside wall of a carbon mould or a metal crucible or wire. The alcohols are those having up to 4 carbon atoms. To resist hydration the slips may be prefixed e.g. to 1000 DEG C. A moisture impermeable coating e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, may be applied to the finished article.
