Abstract
Mould made from 15-80 vol. % of a refractory oxide (pref. ZrO2, opt. stabilised with other oxides), and 85-20 vol. % of a refractory metal (pref. W and/or Mo) is improved by forming inner surface of the mould at the inlet of molten metal from a purely ceramic material. This is pref. achieved by leaching out the metallic component from the wall by means of an acid. The ceramic surface can then be consolidated by firing; the pores may be filled with a slurry of a ceramic oxide. Uniform distribution of heat is achieved, and sticking of the molten metal to the wall near the inlet is prevented.
