Abstract
In a process for the alkaline roasting of materials containing chromium oxide, the material is pressed into cakes and conveyed, free from mechanical stresses, on a support moving counter-current to the flow of roasting gases through a reaction space the length of which is substantially greater than the height, the temperature in the reaction space increasing in the direction of advance of the material to be roasted to a maximum temperature less than the melting or sintering temperature of the cakes. The flow velocity of the roasting gas may be from 1 to 10 m./sec. The cakes may have thickness up to 50 mm. The roasting may be conducted in a tunnel or canal furnace in which the reaction space is separated from the firing space by a wall of bricks, for example silicon carbide bricks, preferably impregnated with a material having a high melting-point, for example kaolin.
