Abstract
698,904. Operating soaking pit covers. STEIN-ATKINSON, Ltd., and WEBB, C. L. A. April 4, 1952 [April 5, 1951 ], No. 7968/51. Class 65 (i) Means for operating' a soaking pit cover 1 suspended from a travelling carriage 8 and adapted to be raised and lowered comprise a rope 12 attached at 11 to the carriage and also to the cover raising and lowering means, the rope passing intermediately around a pulley 15 on the carriage and around a drum 14 having means to rotate it and being located between the attachment 11 and said pulley, and means to vary the effective length of the rope between the drum and the point of attachment to the raising and lowering means. The latter comprise a framework 10 to which are connected the upper arms 9 of bell-crank levers journalled on the axles 5 of the carriage, the cover being suspended from the lower arms 3 of the bell-crank levers. Wheels 6, mounted on the axles, run on rails 7. Attachments 11, to which the respective ends of the rope are connected, are located at one end of the carriage, and pulleys 15 are located at its other end. Drums 14 are keyed to a stationary shaft 17. The rope passes from pulleys 15 to pulleys 16 of the same diameter as the drums and also keyed to the shaft, and thence to pulleys 18 and pulleys 13, the latter being mounted on the framework 10. The bight of the rope between pulleys 13 passes over a spring-loaded pulley 23 attached to the framework. In a modification pulley 23 is omitted, the rope being in two parts, the respective ends of which are attached to pulleys 13. Pulleys 18 are mounted in carriers 29 interconnected by a rope 30 which passes over stationary pulleys 31 and a pulley 32 adapted to be moved longitudinally by hydraulic apparatus 33, or, alternatively, by an electric or other motor. To raise the cover, pulley 32 is moved towards the carriage thus drawing pulleys 18 away from the latter and rocking the bell-crank levers in the appropriate direction. Stops 27, 28 on the framework and carriage respectively limit the rocking movement. Traversing of the carriage is effected by imparting rotary movement to shaft 17 by means of a shaft 21 driven by an electric motor mounted on a platform under which the carriage moves and which also supports pulleys 31 and apparatus 33. Stops are arranged to position the carriage correctly above the pit. It is stated that shaft 17 could be located substantially midway between attachments 11 and pulleys 15, whereby the carriage could be moved in either of two opposite directions as desired.
