Abstract

Class 65 (i) [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] A door operating shaft 2, Fig. 1, is actuated by a lever 1 and a rod 6 connected to a fluid pressure motor 3 through an energy storing device comprising a member 9 forming the free end of the piston rod 5, a spring 7 and a member 10 capable of movement relative to the member 9 to provide for release of energy. To displace the lever 1 from the open position O to the closed position Z pressure fluid is admitted through a duct 18, a valve 19 and a duct 17 to one side of the motor piston 4 causing a pawl 13 to ride over teeth 12 of the piston rod 5 and the spring 7 to be extended to a limit determined by stops 11. In the event of a pressure leak or accidental actuation of the valve lever 20 to exhaust, the pawl allows but slight return movement of the rod 5 and member 9, and this is absorbed by the spring 7. The lever 1 thus remains in a position where it is locked against reverse movement. Reverse movement of the lever is permitted by releasing the pawl by hand (fluid being admitted to the cylinder first if necessary to take the load off the pawl) and then turning the valve to exhaust, the piston being drawn back by the door through the spring 7. In a modification a compression spring 23, Fig. 2, is located in a ratchet sleeve 22 secured to the piston 4 and has one end leaning against the piston and the other end against a collar 24 of a connecting rod 25. Spring compression is limited by abutment of the piston 4 against a collar 32. In this form air can be admitted to the left-hand end of the cylinder if necessary to produce the opening movement, the piston acting on the rod 25 through a stop 26.
