Abstract
Steel alloys having high resistance to wear, abrasion, intergranular corrosion and surface corrosion have the following composition: C up 0.2 per cent, Cr 1.0-6.0 per cent, Al 0.2-2.0 per cent, Ni 0.2-2.0 per cent, Si 0-0.5 per cent, Mn 0-0.6 per cent, Cu 0-0.5 per cent Mo 0-0.6 per cent, one or more of the following elements as killing agents, namely Ti, V, Sr, Nb, Ce up to 0.2 per cent, Fe, and the usual impurities, the balance. The Specification describes the heat-treatment of a 5mm. thick sheet which is annealed at 750 DEG -780 DEG C to bring it into a condition in which it may be machined and has a good press forming capacity. The properties of hardness and wear-resistance are then restored by heating to 900-950 DEG C and cooling in air. The steel may often be worked without previous tempering and then tempered at 300-400 DEG C to increase its tensile strength.
