698,176. Electric motor driving arrangements. CLAYTON CRANE & HOIST CO., Ltd., and CLAYTON, M. T. April 16, 1951 [April 14, 1950], No. 9190/50. Class 35. [Also in Groups XXX and XXXI] A shaft 11 driving a travelling crane hoist or the like is driven by a main motor 10 and by an auxiliary motor 17 to accurately position it. On energizing the main motor the shaft moves axially by spring action to disengage a brake comprising a fly-wheel 12 on the shaft 11 and friction brake linings 13 and 14 on a gear-wheel 21 and cover-plate 15 respectively. On deenergizing the motor the shaft again moves axially to apply the brake. The auxiliary motor 17 mounted on an extension of the cover-plate 15 has a pinion 19 on a driven shaft 18 which meshes with an idle gear 20 and drives gear 21 in line with shaft 11. On switching on the motor to correctly position the hoist, the gear 21 drives the shaft 11 at reduced speed through friction lining 13 and fly-wheel 12.
