Abstract

697,852. Axial-flow and centrifugal compressors; gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. June 25, 1951 [July 3, 1950], No. 16577/50. Classes 110(i) and 110(iii) [Also in Group XXIX] A gas turbine plant for the supply of compressed air, comprising a main turbine-driven compressor which provides the extraneous air supply and also feeds a combustion chamber from which the turbine receives hot gas and a separate compressor also driven by the turbine for supplying fuel gas to the combustion chamber, has the turbine speed controlled by diverting controlled quantities of fuel gas to a reservoir after delivery by the gas compressor. The plant shown comprises a turbine 10 driving a two-stage centrifugal gas compressor 11 and a two-stage centrifugal air compressor 12 having an inter-cooler 13. Part of the delivery of the air compressor 12 passes to a combustion chamber 16 and part to a receiving apparatus such as a blast furnace through a duct 14. The gas compressor 11 delivers to the combustion chamber by way of a by-pass valve 17. The position of the valve member 18 'of the by-pass valve is determined by an aneroid capsule 23 responsive to the pressure in the duct 14 acting through a servomotor 19. Changes of pressure in the duct 14 allow the valve member 18 to vary the gas flow through the pipe 26 to a reservoir from which the gas compressor is fed. The compressor 12 may be of the axial-flow type from which combustion air is bled at an intermediate state. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 531,997.
