Abstract

696,969. Endless conveyers. MITCHELL, F. G. Jan. 3, 1952. Feb. 19, 1951] No. 4021/51. Class 78 (i). In a conveyer of the kind comprising an endless chain of wheeled carriages 10 articulated to one another and arranged to run on rails 30, 31, and an endless belt 12 adapted to provide the actual carrier surface of the material being conveyed and on the loaded run to be supported by the chain, the chain is guided by pulleys 11 to be turned from the forward to return run and vice versa without lateral deflection, and the belt is carried beyond the ends of the upper run of the carriage chain on troughed idlers 13, and turned by pulleys 14, 15, 16, 17 into a return run below the return run of the carriage chain where it is supported on idlers 20. The pulleys 11 may be replaced by one large pulley or by a curved track. The idlers 13 are so arranged that as the end of the forward run of the belt is reached, the trough becomes shallower so as to permit the belt to lie flat against the periphery of the pulley 14. Each carriage comprises a frame 22 carrying at one end an axle 23 on which running wheels 24 are mounted and also a pivoted forked link 25 carrying a coupling piece 26 for engaging a complementary coupling piece 28 on an adjacent carriage. Dished cross plates 32 carried by bearers 33 upstanding from the carriages support the upper run of the belt 12. The chain of carriages is driven by creeper chains 35 carrying dogs 36 engaging the wheel axes 23.
