Abstract

696,446. Slip couplings. BOEING AIRPLANE CO. Feb. 26, 1951, No. 4670/51. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] An inertia flywheel controlled mechanism for preventing wheel skid in fluid pressure brakes, particularly for aircraft, comprises an overrunning device for transmitting torque from a shaft 20 to a sleeve 31 rigid with the flywheel. The shaft 20 is keyed to a gear 3 which fits closely within the collar 31 having slots receiving balls 32. The balls which are of such a number and so spaced that they do not simultaneously move into the spaces between the teeth of gear 3, are pressed radially inwards by the annular coil spring 33 and a non-positive torque is transmitted to the flywheel from shaft 20 by the periodic abutment of the balls and teeth. Due to the slots in the sleeve 31 being inclined to a radius, the torque transmitted by the flywheel to the collar 31 when overrunning is less than that transmitted to the flywheel during acceleration.
