Abstract

695,923. Spanners. CALBOALEMANY, A. Sept. 7, 1951 [Sept. 7, 1950], No. 21210/51. Class 61 (iii). A spanner having a jaw 1 integral with the handle and a movable jaw 15 guided in a transverse opening in the head is operated by a screw spindle 11 provided with threads 9 and 10 of opposite hand and different pitch. The threads 10 engage with threads 3 on the handle, the coarser pitch threads 9 being engaged by a nut 8 slidable non-rotatably on the handle. Grooves in opposite sides of the nut are engaged by guide ribs on the handle, the pin 5 preventing the nut from leaving the spindle. The upper end of the spindle has a reduced tapered neck 12 and a spherical end 13 which is received in a cylindrical, longitudinally slotted bore 14 parallel to a lower guide surface provided on the movable jaw. The neck 12 engages the lower guide surface when the spindle is moved upwards to close the jaws; downward movement of the spindle causes engagement of the spherical part 13 with the wall of the bore on each side of the slot and separation of the jaws.
