Abstract
695,253. Tubular heat-exchangers; absorption refrigeration systems. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Aug. 23, 1951 [March 23, 1951], No. 19950/51. Classes 29 and 64 (iii) A heat-exchanger comprises a shell 35 in the form of a parallelepiped, headers 36, 37 at opposite ends of the shell, spaced tubes 38 extending between the headers and transverse baffles 42 dividing the shell into a number of intercommunicating compartments and disposed to cause the external fluid flow back and forth across the tubes from an inlet 44 provided in the first compartment of the series to an outlet 45 in the last compartment, turbulators (e.g. spiral wire coils 40) being provided within each tube. In the form shown the tubes are staggered and baffle bars 43 (Fig. 4) are provided to prevent by-passing of the tubes by the fluid flowing through the shell compartments. The apparatus is preferably used for the exchange of heat between "strong" and "weak" solutions in an absorption refrigeration system e.g. of the kind described in Specification 639,413 and when so used, "strong" solution is directed through the shell and over the tubes whilst "weak" solution passes through the tubes, steam pipes 57 being provided within the shell for use if inadvertent crystallization occurs in the heat exchanger. In the system described it is stated that water discharged from the condenser may be re-used, e.g. after passage through a cooling tower.
