Abstract

694,179. Printing-surfaces. HOE & CRABTREE, Ltd., R. June 30, 1950 [July 1, 1949], No. 16459/50. Class 100(ii) A printing cylinder with a cylindrical platesupporting surface intended to receive thin printing plates, .has clamping means which comprise hooks spaced apart and formed to engage in grooves in the opposite edge portions of the outer surface of a plate, and means to move the hooks, for opposite edges, relatively apart to stretch a plate between them and to hold it to the cylinder. The cylinder 5 on shaft 4 is designed to hold two printing plates 1 of semi-cylindrical form and preferably formed as a casting of magnesium alloy about 1/16th inch thick grooved at 2 and 3 along its leading and trailing straight edges, the grooves being about 1/32 inch in depth. The clamping mechanism for each plate comprises bars or shafts 6, 7 rotatably journaled in the cylinder body and held by blocks 8 and 9 bolted to the cylinder as at 10. Each shaft 6, 7 is provided with plate gripping hooks 12, 13 which enter the grooves 2, 3 to grasp and stretch the plate around the cylinder. The shafts 6, 7 are rotated to grasp and hold, or to release, the plate by means of cam follower arms 14, 15 carrying rollers 16, 18 which engage under the action of springs 22, 24, cams 20, 20<SP>1</SP> respectively on components 20<SP>2</SP> which can be turned about the shaft 4 and are held in position by a collar 21 secured to the shaft. The components 20<SP>2</SP> can be moved by means of a wrench 26 inserted into a socket 27. The outer surface of the blocks 8, 9 have rounded surfaces 28, 29 underlying the hooks 12, 13 and to release the ptates, the components 20<SP>2</SP> are moved, separately clockwise so that the rollers 16, 18 are pressed inwardly, the' hooks 12, 13 moving outwardly and away from the cylinder as shown at 13<SP>1</SP>. Opposite movement to clamp the plates causes the hooks 12, 13 to grasp the grooves 2, 3 and tension the plate 1 over the surfaces 28, 29.
