Abstract

1,003,838. Feeding sheets; printing-machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY Ltd. Dec. 13, 1963 [Dec. 14, 1962], No. 47219/62. Headings B6B and B6C. A sheet registering device for a printing press or like machine comprising gripper members carried on a gripper bar supported between spaced apart endless chains, is characterized in that the gripper bar is adapted to be moved relative to the chains laterally and longitudinally to its direction of travel by adjustable abutments. A gripper bar 1 carrying grippers such as disclosed in Specification 996,996, is attached at each end to a yoke 2. T-shaped members 9 are slidably mounted on pins 6 extending between the arms of each yoke. In addition, each member 9 is slidably mounted on pins 10 fixed to the adjacent endless chain. At least one of the members 9 has a block 11 fixed to its upper surface. The leading edge of the block is chamfered at 15 to facilitate engagement of the block with an adjustable guide channel 12. The latter registers the grippers laterally as they approach a printing position. The members 9 are clamped in their registered position by pivoted jaws 19, 20 at each end of the printing cylinder 16, Fig. 2. The jaws are opened and closed under the control of a cam 23 and follower 22. The follower rides in a slot in arm 21 and is urged outwardly by a compression spring. In operation, the cam lifts the follower in excess of the movement required, the additional movement being taken up by the spring. Levers 29, 30 are pivoted on stub shafts 27, 28, at each end of the printing cylinder 16, Fig. 3, and urged apart by a spring 44 surrounding a headed rod 38. The latter is pinned to the lever 29 and slidable in an eye bolt 37 on the lever 30. Heads 33 on the levers 29 co-operate with plates 8 on the yokes 2, when the levers 29, 30 are moved under the control of cam 23 and follower 32, to register the grippers longitudinally. Movement of the levers 29 is limited by a stop 34 advanced or retracted step-by-step by a solenoid, as described in Specification 996,997.
