Abstract
692,568. Automatic control systems. ROBICHAUX, R. P. Feb. 9, 1950 [Feb. 10, 1949; Dec. 22, 1949], No. 3341/50. Class 38 (iv). [Also in Group I] In the adjustment of the hydrogen ion concentration of a flowable material, the material is caused to flow at a constant rate, and a pH- correction medium is automatically introduced, while the material is under vacuum, whenever the pH value deviates from an established magnitude. With the apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2, milk is pumped into a distributing head 7 in a vacuum chamber 5 and is there mixed with steam; from the chamber 5 the milk flows into a chamber 11 in which is a pressure lower than in the chamber 5, from the chamber 11 is introduced tangentially into a chamber 17, in which is a pressure lower than in the chamber 11, to swirl down over the inner wall of the chamber 17, and is pumped from the chamber 17 by way of a conduit 21 to a cooler 22. From the conduit 21 is a by-pass pipe 31 to which the flow of milk is regulated by a valve 32; milk flowing into the pipe 31 passes through a chamber 331 in which is an assembly of a measuring electrode, a reference electrode, and a temperature compensator; the assembly is connected to a potentiometer 34, the pH of the milk at the operating temperature being measured on the scale 34<SP>1</SP> of the potentiometer. Upon deviation of the pH from the control value, a controller 37, which is connected electrically to the potentiometer 34, causes operation of a motor 39 (Fig. 1) to open a valve 30 and allow pH-correction medium to pass from a vessel 27 thereof, along a pipe 29, into the chamber 17; alternatively (Fig. 2), deviation of pH from the control valve in one direction brings about delivery of an appropriate pH- correction medium from one of the vessels 27<SP>1</SP>, and deviation of pH in the other direction brings about delivery from the other of the vessels 27<SP>1</SP> of a different pH-correction medium.
