Abstract

Class 94(i) [Also in Group XVIII] In filling-machines in which powdery material is fed from a hopper to one or a succession of measuring pockets from which charges of powder are fed to containers, each pocket comprising upper and lower portions arranged for relative axial movement to vary the quantity of powder measured, the upper and lower portions of each pocket are connected by an intermediate portion of rubber or other flexible material capable of being deformed to allow this relative movement. As shown, powder 11 flows from a supply pipe 12 into a collecting chamber 13 from which it passes through apertures 14 in a rotatable wheel 16 into measuring pockets 17 having pivoted bases 19 which are opened at intervals to discharge the powder through shoots 22 into cartons 23 moved into position by a conveyer chain 24. The chamber 13 is arranged in an annular channel 26 in the wheel and forms with the base thereof an enclosed space through which the pockets pass in succession. Each pocket is constituted by a moulded rubber sleeve bonded at its upper end to a flange 20 and at its lower end to a flange 25 carried by an adjusting wheel 33, the sleeve being formed with upper and lower frusto-conical portions interconnected by an intermediate portion 30 which is free to flex to allow adjustment of the volume of the pocket. The wheel 16 is carried by a series of pillars 27 extending upwardly from a chain wheel 28 secured to a sleeve 29 forming part of the main driving gear, and the wheel 33 is formed with a series of bosses 34, slidable on the pillars, and a central hub 36 supported on a thrust bearing 37 carried by a sleeve 38 making threaded engagement with a rotatable adjusting shaft 41. The latter may be rotated manually or mechanically to raise or lower the wheel 33, thus varying the volume of the pockets.
