Abstract

692,358. Making hollow-ware; corrugating; jointing. BARNES, F. T. J. June 8, 1951 [June 9, 1950; March 20, 1951], Nos. 14508/50 and 6694/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). A hoop or the like is secured to the cylindrical wall of a closed container by applying a closely fitting hoop and pressing a tool radially in against the hoop to form a shallow groove in the assembled parts, said wall being unsupported internally or supported only by gas pressure or liquid. The materials from which the parts are made may be such that, after the operation, said wall resiliently engages the hoop; thus the hoop may be of malleable metal, e.g. stainless steel. If the container is of copper, aluminium or aluminium alloy the hoop may be of mild steel, aluminium or aluminium alloy. If liquid is used as an internal support its escape is restricted by a safety-valve. The container may be made by welding together a central cylindrical part and two deep drawn ends and then pickling. The hoops may each have an inner flange 12, Fig. 3, to engage the end of a container 10, an outer ridge 16 on which the container is rolled and hand holes 171. The outer edge may also be reinforced by a strip 15 welded inside. A container 10, with two hoops 11 thereon, is placed on a rotatable table 18, Fig. 2, being centred by a stop 20. A cap 24, Fig. 1, rotatably carried by a slide 19 is then moved down by a hydraulic ram (not shown), operated by oil from a hand pump 25. Four rollers 33 carried by hinged frames 45, 46 are then closed on the container and the frames are connected by a hydraulic jack 51. The table 18 is then rotated and oil is pumped to the jack by a hand-pump 55 to press the rollers 33 on to the work, until adjustable stops 69, 70 engage, and form a groove 170 of the desired depth. The oil pressure is released and springs return the parts to allow the work to be removed. If the container is to be supported internally, the cap 24 has a fluid supply pipe 77, Fig. 3, with thick rubber washer 79 to engage a neck 73 as the cap is moved down. A bottom drain 72, Fig. 1, is kept closed except to remove water or oil, if used. The number of grooves and the number of tools for each groove may be varied.
