Abstract

691,984. Glass-metal seals. TESLA, NATIONAL CORPORATION, HRZEK, B., and ESPE, W. Nov. 9, 1950 [Nov. 12, 1949], No. 27460/50. Class 36. Metal wires or rods to be sealed to glass are first treated with a filling medium comprising a solution of sodium tetraborate to which is added at least one metal oxide which is soluble in sodium tetraborate when heated. The sodium tetraborate may be dissolved in an alcoholic solution of sodium acetate, or an aqueous solution may be used. The oxide is preferably an oxide of at least one metal constituting the metal alloy of the wires or rods. After cleaning, the wires or rods are immersed in the filling medium and heated, which causes surface cracks in the rods to be impregnated therewith. After evaporation of the solvent from the filling medium the oxide dissolves in the sodium tetraborate, forming a " glass solder " between the parts to be sealed.
