Abstract

691,631. Valves. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 9. 1951 [Feb. 23. 1950], No. 3163/51. Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi) [Also in Group XXIX] A coil spring 13 for a poppet valve 5, which rotates whilst open in response to the twist of the spring, is seated at one end on a Belleville or like washer 25 which on compression of the spring 13 is flattened against a surface 26, a film of oil - momentarily trapped thereunder allowing it to rotate, which momentarily halts rotation of the valve 5. As shown the washer 25 is centred on an annular surface 36 and the surface 26 is flat and formed on the cylinder head. The upper end of the spring 13 engages an abutment 12 fixed to the valve stem by split cotters 10. The stamped metal valve rocker 11 has a recess 15 pivoting on the part spherical head 18 of a nut 17 having a lubricating oil passage 30 therethrough leading to the bearing surface 18, the excess oil flowing through aperture 16 on to the surface 26. The valve 5 is rotated by the spring twist during the first part of its opening stroke until the washer 25 is flattened and floats on its film of oil, whereby the washer 25 rotates and the valve rotation is halted momentarily until the oil film is squeezed from underneath the washer 25. The valve 5 then rotates during the remaining part of its opening stroke and during its entire closing stroke. The washer 25 may be interposed between the upper end of spring 13 and the abutment 12.
