690,961. Sight-testing apparatus. KEELER, C. H. Nov. 12, 1951 [Dec. 18, 1950], No. 30810/50. Class 97 (i). In a mirror device for an ophthalmoscope or like optical instrument comprising a transparent plate having a silvered surface for reflecting light to the patient's eye, and an aperture in said surface for transmitting light reflected by the patient's eye into that of the observer, to prevent "flare" due to dust deposited on the aperture, the plate has a thickened portion in register therewith and has for the emergence of the transmitted light, a polished exit surface which is substantially displaced from the silvered reflecting surface. As shown, the plate 23 has a silvered surface 25 apertured at 26 to receive the beam 21 reflected by the patient's eye and has cemented thereto a glass prism 27 having an exit surface 29 remote from the aperture 26 and so not illuminated by the direct beam falling on that aperture. The remaining surfaces 30, 31 and 34 of the prism are blackened. A modified prism in the form of a parallepiped is described. Prism and plate may be moulded integrally, the reflecting silvering being provided on the front surface of the plate.
