Abstract

462,332. Refractometers. RAYNOR OPTICAL CO., Ltd., HOBSON, E. N., and BATEMAN, A. J. Sept. 9, 1935, No. 25063. [Class 97 (i)] A refractometer of the critical angle type comprises a small refracting prism of high refractive index, a lens close to the exit face of the prism, an optical viewing system comprising one or more lenses and a mirror or reflecting prism, and a scale of which an image is formed in the eyepiece. As shown, the apparatus comprises a casing 1 having a window 3 admitting light to the small prism 10, the optically flat face 11 of which projects through a slot in a wall 7 of the casing. Light internally reflected by the face 11 emerges from the optically flat face 12 and is received by a lens 15 having a plane surface 16 adjacent the prism, and a curved surface 17. The viewing system comprises an eyepiece 6, a lens 20 and a mirror 22. A scale plate 24 is mounted below the mirror and is seen along one side thereof, which is left unsilvered. Alternatively, the whole of the mirror may be thinly silvered so as to transmit light from the scale. The substance 35 of which the refractive index is to be measured is placed in contact with the face 11 of the prism 10. In a modification, the scale is placed between the lens 20 and a further lens, and the mirror is replaced by a reflecting prism which forms an image of the scale in the field of view.
