Abstract
690,359. Grinding glass. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., and COOK, T. S. July 4, 1951 [June 6, 1951], No. 13457/51. Class 60. A method of protecting horizontally-disposed flat glass as it is advanced between co-axial grinding tools operating on both faces consists in continually admitting a gas of low solubility in water into the central cavity 26 of each tool 1 operating on the underface and connecting the cavity with atmospheric air. The liquid carry- ing the abrasive particles is fed through a bore 6 in the spindle of the disc and is supplied through a pipe 8, a gland 9 and a hose 12 from a tundish 13 in which the liquid level is maintained constant at a height of about 18 inches above the grinding surface 2. Liquid ejected from the edge of the grinding disc is caught by a wall 27 and runs down to a trough 28 from which it is drained. The air or other gas is supplied through a' hose 15 and a conduit 14 with a bore of # inch to “ inch diameter passing through the pipe 8 and the bore 6. This conduit may extend up to the level of the flange 3 or end at a position in the bore of the spindle. The air pressure is adjusted by a valve 17 and a gauge 18 to a value ¢ to 1 pound per square inch greater than the hydrostatic head at the point of injection. The vent pipe 20 is preferably provided with a choke to produce a small back pressure. The vent pipe may be arranged in the manner described in Specification 672,989 and the grinding disc may be constructed as described in Specification 671,961. The invention is intended for use with large tools of, say, 123 inches diameter.
