689,932. Rotary swivels. NATIONAL SUPPLY CO., and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Jan. 18, 1951 [May 26, 1950], No. 1378/51. Class 85 [Also in Group XXVIII] A washpipe and packing assembly connecting the passageways of the stationary part to that of the rotary part of a swivel comprises a relatively rotatable washpipe element and a packing unit of which one or the other is formed as two disconnected components, each component being rigidly secured to either the stationary or the rotary part by a threaded coupling which, on its release from said part, can be moved axially of the washpipe element and is so dimensioned that the overall length of said couplings and packing element is less than that of the washpipe element, thus permitting the assembly to be withdrawn laterally from the swivel. In one embodiment, the washp i p e element i s divided into two components 21, 22 that are secured by flanges 34 . to the stationary part 15 and the rotary part 12 of the swivel. In a 'second embodiment, the packing element is divided into two compartments secured to the parts of the swivel, the washpipe element being surrounded by said packing components and being freely mounted on the fixed and stationary parts of the swivel.
