689,883. Resilient and slip couplings. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. Aug. 22, 1951 [Nov. 24, 1950], No. 19785/51. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XVII] A pick-up baler for hay or the like of the kind in which the baling mechanism includes an inertia flywheel to which drive is transmitted from a tractor through a transmission shaft and universal coupling means, has yieldable friction coupling means interposed between the said flywheel and an input drive connection .from the tractor whereby variations between power plant speed and the inertia flywheel speed may be compensated by slipping of the yieldable friction coupling means. Yieldable shock-absorbing means are interposed between said flywheel and an output drive shaft connected to the bating mechanism whereby stresses due to large reciprocating masses may be cushioned and relieved. Drive from a power take off shaft 14 of a tractor 10 is transmitted to the baling meehanism of a towed pick-up baler 16 through a universal coupling 29, telescopic transmission shaft 28, universal coupling 32 and yieldable friction coupling means 34 to an inertia flywheel 33 of the baling mechanism. The friction coupling means comprises, Fig. 2, a disc 38 secured to a knuckle part 35 of the universal coupling 32 and pressed, by a spring-loaded coupling pressure plate 42 carried by the flywheel 33, against a shoulder face 48 of the flywheel. The flywheel drives, through yieldable shock-absorbing means, a shaft 66 driving through a shaft 73 and bevel gears 76, 27 a crank shaft 26 which by means of a crank arm 24 and pitman 23 reciprocates a bale-compressing plunger 22 in the baling chamber. The yieldable shockabsorbing means comprise Figs. 2, 4, compression springs 56, 57 disposed between projections 52, 53 on the flywheel 33 and lugs 54, 55 on a driving plate 51. The plate 51 is journaled on a hub 49 of the flywheel and is secured by a shear pin 60 to a driven plate 58 welded to a sleeve 50 splined onto the shaft 66. Limit stops 61, 62 are provided on the flywheel 33 to limit the extension of the springs 56, 57. The yieldable shock-absorbing means may be replaced by a yieldable friction coupling similar to the coupling 34.
