Abstract

Degradation of nylon by exposure to light is reduced by incorporating with the nylon one or more salts of aluminium, chromium, copper or manganese with a hydroxybenzoic acid or anthranilic acid. In examples: (1) (i) 0.1 per cent by weight and (ii) 0.5 per cent by weight of manganese salicylate is shaken with polyhexamethylene adipamide chip which is then moulded at 245 DEG C. into a rod. The rod is melted and spun into filaments at 280 DEG C. The strength of the drawn yarn is compared with the strength of untreated yarn before and after exposure to ultra-violet light; (2) as (1) using 0.1 per cent copper salicylate; (3) as (1) using 0.5 per cent by weight of chromium salicylate; (4) as (1) using 0.1 and 0.5 per cent of aluminium salicylate; (5) as in (1) using 0.5 per cent of aluminium anthranilate. Salts of aluminium with salicylic or anthranilic acid are preferred. It is stated that nylon containing a delustrant such as titanium dioxide is especially susceptible to degradation. The preparation of various of the stabilizing salts is described (see Group IV (b)). Specifications 527,532, 649,481, [Group IV (c)], and 652,947 are referred to.ALSO:The Specification describes the preparation of manganese, copper, chromium, and aluminium salicylates and aluminium anthranilate by adding solutions of (i) manganese sulphate, (ii) cupric sulphate and (iii) chromium sulphate to salicylic acid dissolved in a solution of sodium carbonate, (iv) and (v) aluminium sulphate to salicylic acid and anthranilic acid dissolved in a solution of sodium hydroxide. The various salts precipitate. The Specification refers in general to the use of manganese, copper, chromium and aluminium salts of hydroxybenzoic and anthranilic acids as degradation inhibitors for nylon (see Group IV (a)).
