Abstract

689,615. Variable-speed gearing. BEIER, J. Sept. 17, 1951 [Sept. 18, 1950], No. 21821/51. Addition to 671,561. Class 80 (ii). In variable-speed friction gearing according to the parent Specification, losses due to air friction are reduced by maintaining a sub-atmospheric pressure in the gear casing 20 or by filling the casing with a gas which is much lighter than air, such as hydrogen or helium. The liquid required for forming the powertransmitting films is supplied into the casing through atomising nozzles 22 fed through a cooler 26 by a pump 24 driven by the gear and drawing from the casing 20. An air vessel 29 is provided, whereby the pressure in casing 20 is reduced progressively with increase in speed.
