Abstract
689,303. Butterfly valves. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Jan. 4, 1952 [Feb. 12, 1951], No. 328/52. Class 135. The downstream face 6 of a butterfly valve controlling a liquid flow is provided with openings 15 through which air at atmospheric or greater pressure can reach the cavity usually present on the downstream side of such a valve in order to stabilise the cavitation and so prevent the valve suffering the shocks engendered by the periodical collapse of the cavity. As shown, the interior of the valve is provided with a sleeve secured at its ends to a hollow spindle through which the air is drawn or blown, and the air passes to the openings 15 through coincident ports in the sleeve and the spindle. A check valve in the air supply line prevents liquid being drawn into that line should the pressure rise on the downstream side of the butterfly valve.
