Abstract
689,256. Cylinders; cooling; valves. BRITISH LUBRICATING OIL & GREASE RESEARCH ORGANIZATION, Ltd. July 31, 1951 [July 31, 1950], No. 19058/50. Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi). In an engine cylinder and cylinder head assembly comprising a cylinder barrel 1, Fig. 1, which may be of forged or cast aluminium or high silicon aluminium alloy having cooling fins 2 along the major portion of its length, a reciprocating sleeve valve 3 formed with inlet and exhaust ports which co-act with three inlet ports 3a, Fig. 4, and two exhaust ports 3b, for example, in the barrel, a ring-like base 4, Fig. 1, detachably connected to the lower sleeve valve end to permit ready displacement thereof, and the cylinder head 8 depending into the upper end of the barrel, the head being in the form of a cylindrical well including a base 8b fitted on its upper outer surface with cooling fins 13, Fig. 2, the head 8 is connected to the barrel 1 in a detachable manner to enable it to be replaced by any one of a number of other heads of various predetermined depths to obtain different compression ratios. The port arrangement is such that rapid opening and closing of the ports is obtained together with an overlap of the opening of the inlet ports 3a and closing of the exhaust ports 3b. To the lower end of the sleeve valve 3 is threaded the ring 4 having a projection 5 by which the valve is reciprocated, the ring and valve being locked together by pins 6 and 7. The wall 8b is secured by bolts 12 to a cylindrical wall 8a which latter incorporates an upper flange 9 so that the cylinder head can be secured by bolts 10 to the barrel. A forced draught of cooling air is delivered through an inlet 15, Fig. 2, and an annular duct 14, Fig. 1, to a position just above the wall 8b so that the air in rising passes between the fins 13 which latter are both removable to facilitate cleaning and interrupted when a sparking plug 17 is used, the plug being screwed directly into the wall 8b or into an adaptor therein; the adaptor may receive a fuel injection nozzle, not shown, in place of the plug 17. The aluminium head 8 may be cleaned by immersion in a bath of nitric acid saturated with chromium oxide.
