Abstract
In a process of melting metals in a rotary furnace of polygonal cross-section, (see Group XII), with or without refining action with the slag formed or added, the furnace is at first rotated at a slow speed e.g. 1 rev./min. and then, as the charge melts, the speed is increased up to a maximum of 10 revs./min. The process may be applied to the melting of chips, foils or scrap of light metals, zinc, lead, brass or bronze with the addition of slag or salts such as sodium sulphate, zinc chloride or zinc oxide, or to the production of alloys e.g. the alloying of aluminium with manganasese by the addition of manganese chloride. Refining processes include the removal of magnesium from aluminium alloys by means of cryolite or the removal of aluminium from brass by saltpetre.
