689,163. Slate cutting. TUBELA ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., AHLIN, F., and RIDEALGH, H. May 2, 1949 [May 26, 1948], No. 14232/48. Class 124. A hand tool for cutting slates and like brittle sheet ma terial comprises two handles pivoted to one another, one being rigid with a jaw comprising two parallel plates spacec from one another and having edges lying in a single plane and the other with a jaw having a single plate with a convex curved cutting edge of the full width o: the plate lying be tween and paralle to the plates of the first jaw, the ar rangement being such that when the handles are drawn together the curved edge of the 'single jaw passes progressively through the plane of the edges of the two plates. As shown one jaw comprises a pair of spaced plates A, A', formed by bending a sheet of metal through 180 degrees and holding the free ends by a rivet and spacer A<SP>4</SP>. On a bolt C passing through both plates is pivoted a single blade B, spaced from the edges of the plates A, A<SP>1</SP> by spacers D. A spring F attached to the handle A<SP>3</SP> urges the jaws into the open position and a stop A<SP>5</SP> on the handle AS prevents the operator's hand slipping during use. The thickness of the cutting edge of the blade B may be 0.1-0.2 inches and it may taper from cutting edge to trailing edge and also from the free end to the hinged end.
