Abstract
665,051. Shears. FULLER, D. J. Aug. 31, 1950. [Sept. 8, 1849] No. 23310/49. Class 30. In a pair of hand shears for cutting sheet metal etc. and of the kind having a pair of pivoted jaw-like blades with shearing edges and each provided with a handle, the blade which is uppermost in use is in line or in aligned curvilinear relationship with its shank and the lower blade is laterally offset from its shank so that the lower blade and its shank, and the planes in which they move, are on opposite sides of the upper blade and its shank, and the plane in which they move, the pivotal axis of the blades being above the cutting edge of the lower blade. As shown, the upper jaw 1 has an aligned shank 3, a cut-away portion 5 being provided at the junction of the blade and shank, which co-operates with a cut-away portion 7 at the junction of the lower blade 2 and its offset shank 4 to which it is connected by a transverse web 6. The blades are pivotally connected together at 8a above the cutting edge 2a of the lower blade and the tendency of the tips of the blades to move apart when the nut 8a and bolt are tightened, is counteracted, by forming the face of the shank 4, adjacent the pivot, slightly convergent with the cutting edge 2a. A space is left between the upper surface of the web 6 and the undersurface of the shank 3 to allow relative pivoting between the shanks and to facilitate cutting on a curve.
