Abstract

689,009. Parachutes. FRIEDER, L. P. April 30, 1951. [March 9, 1951] No. 10021/51. Class 4. In a parachute pack, a folded parachute, its shroud lines, and a load support attached to said lines, are housed within a container closed by a sealed cover, and a static cord, attached at one end to the parachute by a rupturable connection extends around the cover adjacent the cover periphery and then transversely and externally of the cover, a bight thereof re-entering the container through the cover and being connected to a rupturable holder retaining the parachute in position, leaving the opposite end of the cord ready for attachment to any suitable anchorage on an aircraft the container having external connections for securing it to a load and the load support being partially withdrawable through a side of the container for direct connection to the load. The pack comprises a container 20 having a false bottom 54. External and internal straps 24 and 34, 36, 38, 40 are attached to the walls of the container the straps 24 carrying tapes 22 attached to the load 100 and interconnected by a further retaining tape 102. The straps 34 and 40, 36 and 38 are respectively interconnected by frangible cords 42, 44 in turn attached to a static line 52 by straps 46, 48 and a loop 50. Shroud lines 58 of the parachute 68 are releasably secured in tape pockets 56 attached to the bottom 54 and the parachute is folded with its hem surrounded by a frangible cord 70 and retained within the container 20 by the straps 46, 48. The shroud lines are divided iuto two groups attached to straps 64, each of which carries at its other end a load attaching shackle 32, so positioned within the container that it may be withdrawn for use through a normally sealed opening 28. The crown of the parachute carries an anchorage 72 connected to one end of the static line of which the other end 90 is attached to a part 104 of the aircraft. The line passes through the upper edge of the box and is taped to the outer edge of the lid 76 and is then looped inside the lid through an aperture 84. In operation, when the combined load and container are dropped the static line 52 is drawn through the aperture 84 to release the lid 76 and break the connections 42, 44. It then draws out the parachute 68 and the shroud lines 58. The line 70 is broken as the parachute commences to open and the straps 64 break through the container 20 above the apertures 28 so that the load is suspended directly by the parachute.
