Class 39(i) To facilitate adjustment of the secondaryemission from a platinum coated molybdenum grid of a thermionic valve, e.g. a transmitting valve, the carbonised tungsten-thorium incandescent cathode is heated, e.g. nearly to the melting point of tungsten, so that carbon therefrom is deposited on the grid. A black platinum coating, one micron thick may be produced on the grid wire electrolytically, and annealed at 900‹C in hydrogen until the colour is grey. The grid may subsequently be heated to adjust its secondary emission.
