Abstract

271,885. Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of Rashevsky, N.). May 27, 1926, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes. - A thermionic cathode of the thoriated type is activated by depositing on it a coating of nickel or similar metal having a low melting point and a low work function. A thoriated tungsten filament 2 may be mounted near a flat nickel anode 3 or inside a cylindrical nickel anode in an exhausted bulb, and the anode heated by current induced from a winding 5 around the bulb, so that nickel is vaporized and deposited on the filament. It is stated that the reduction of the thorium oxide begins at a lower temperature than when nickel is not present. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a cathode consisting of a core of tungsten or molybdenum, coated with nickel. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
