Abstract

688,454. Magnetometers. KOULOMZINE, T. Aug. 15, 1951, No. 19281/51. Class 37. A magnetometer comprises a magnet attached to a float and mounted to oscillate about a horizontal axis, immersed in a liquid, the centre of gravity of the magnet and float being displaced both horizontally and vertically from the axis of the magnet. A float 5, Figs. 1, 2, carries two bar magnets 4, and is pivoted at 6 ; adjustable weights 7, 9 allow the centre of gravity g to be displaced both horizontally and vertically from the centre of symmetry; a liquid 3 (e.g. a mixture of ethyl alcohol and carbon tetrachloride) fills the container and is of approximately the same density as that of the oscillatory system. A mirror 11 allows deflection due to the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field to be measured. Vanes 17 provide damping. In a modification for measuring the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field, the magnets are disposed vertically, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
