Abstract
1,266,939. Gravity meters. ESSO PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO. July 29, 1969, No. 38082/69. Heading G1N. The value of g is measured by the natural resonant frequency of a wire carrying a mass at its lower end. As shown for measuring g in a borehole so that the density of surrounding strata may be ascertained, a tungsten wire 117 Fig. 7, is supported between the poles of a magnet 135, with a mass 115 at its lower end. The wire is included in the feedback circuit of an amplifier 157 Fig.17, to produce oscillations at its resonant frequency, which are fed through a filter 161 to meter 163 and counter 165. Facilities are provided for (a) ensuring that the wire is vertical, (b) damping the wire during transit, (c) enclosing the wire in an evacuated chamber at a raised temperature, (d) supporting the instrument section in a vacuum flask.
