Class 97 (2) In a level of the pendulum type the pendulum is pivoted about the axis of symmentry of an annular magret system which damps its movements, pendulum and magnet being relatively axially adjustable. As shown in Fig. 5, the pointer 4, moving over a scale 9, is secured to a spindle carried in bearings 6, 7. A disc 8D, attached to the spindle, moves over the face of an annular magnet 10 and carries a weight in the form of a mercury capsule 8C. The effective separation of the magnet 10 and disc 8D may be varied by adjusting the magnet, by substituting a disc of different thickness or adding an extra disc 8E. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the pendulum 8 hangs within the magnet system, or it may hang past the end face with a cylindrical end portion projecting in proximity to the outer face of the magnet. A further cylindrical portion may project within the magnet. The casing 1 carries tangential straight edges 2, 3. The magnet may be formed of two juxtaposed horseshoe portions. A cam-operated device may be provided to centre the spindle within the magnet system.
