Abstract

1304165 Vibration damping DATAWELL NV 27 Jan 1971 3258/71 Heading F2S [Also in Division G1] In a pendulum system comprising a liquidfilled vessel 1 and a body suspended therein whose weight differs very little from that of the liquid it displaces, the body is made of synthetic material of density 1 g/cm.<SP>3</SP> and the liquid contains water and substances dissolved therein, the differences in density of the liquid and synthetic material in the temperature range (-5‹ to 35‹ C.) being smaller than 1% of the density of the synthetic material. The system comprises a closed spherical vessel 1 with the body suspended by a thread 3 from a permanently attached radial bar 2. The body comprises a platform 4 of synthetic material, whose weight in the liquid is not affected by liquid absorption, and carries an accelerometer 7 and a dipole 9 (to give the system a permanent orientation). The accelerometer consists mainly of the same material as the platform 4 and the dipole comprises synthetic material 10 and a small metal body 11, which together have the same density as the platform 4. To reduce insulation leakages from an electrical accelerometer the electrical conduction of the liquid is limited by including sugar alcohols as components using e.g., glycerol and/or sorbitol and/or glycol. The temperature limitation avoids differential rates of expansion sufficient to upset the balance of the system unduly. The body is suspended at its centre of gravity and when the system is used for investigating wave phenomena in the sea, its very long period of oscillation ensures that horizontal accelerations of the waves do not tilt the platform, thus enabling vertical accelerations to be measured accurately, so long as the sea temperature is within the required range.
