Abstract
688,005. Casting-machines; moulds; cores. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 1, 1951 [June 12, 1950], No. 13016/51. Class 83 (i). The die part 50, Fig. 2, of a casting-machine through which molten metal is forced into the die cavity 62 is thermally insulated from the nozzle by an insulating washer held in a recess of the part 50 by a nozzle-engaging plate 92. The washer 88 may be of mica and be located in an annular recess 86 in a block 54 which may comprise one part or, as shown, two parts 80, 82 and may also have a water or other fluid cooling passage 90. The plate 92 has a nozzle-engaging recess 102, the whole being welded at 84, 94 to form a unit which is held in the recess 52 of the part 50 by a washer and screw 104. In a modification, the parts 80, 82 are omitted, the insulating washer 188, Fig. 3, being located in a shallow recess 152 of the part 150 to which the plate 194 is bolted. The edge of this plate 194 may have a bevelled edge 198 to make line contact with the part 150 and thus reduce conduction of heat, and for the same reason the plate may have recesses 202. The mould may have a water-cooled core 64, which extends into the sprue 68 for rapid cooling, and ejectors 72. The casting-machine shown has a hardened liner 20, Fig. 1, shrink-fitted in the cylinder bore, a shield 34 over the molten-metal intake 24 and a nozzle 40 which is jointed to a hardened steel spacer 44 fitted into the metal-supplying neck 36 and is heated by a burner 56.
