Apparatus for the continuous casting of metal comprises a mould block 21, Fig. 4, having a reservoir 22 for the molten metal and a wall 24 provided with spaced grooves 25 in its face, a water-cooled wall 23 opposed to the wall 24 and provided with corresponding grooves 26, which together form mould passages communicating with the reservoir, and a baffle to separate the molten metal from the cooled wall above the floor of said reservoir. The baffle may take the form of a wall 28, similar in form to the wall 24, and rods 31 of graphite &c. adjustable in the passages so formed. In a modification the bottom of the reservoir 2, Fig. 1, has a bore to form a cylindrical wall with grooves 5 and the cooled wall comprises a grooved cylinder 3 fitting therein. The baffle has the form of a sleeve 8 with internal grooves to form, with the grooves 6, passages for the adjustable rods 31. The baffle 8 extends to the floor of the reservoir 2 but has passages 9 to admit the molten metal to the mould passages. The mould walls 24 may be coated with sheet-metal which may be heated to about the melting-point of the cast metal by passing an electric current through it by conductors 12. The mould may be reciprocated axially of the rods cast, forwardly at the same speed as the rods and rearwardly at a quicker speed as in Specification 437,064. Mould materials.-The mould block may be of zirconia.
