Abstract

To refine metal as it is poured into a cooled, bottomless mould 1 for continuous casting, a stream 7 of slag is supplied continuously from a duct 6 on to the metal bath 4 and the slag layer 8 is kept molten by an electric current passed through it between the mould and a watercooled tube 9 by which the slag is continuously removed. The slag stream 7 and metal stream 5 enter the mould cavity eccentrically. The mould 1 and tube 9 are of copper and the latter is surmounted by a pump, e.g. with an ejector, for the slag removal.
