687,341. Differential gearing. FERGUSON, Ltd., H. March 31, 1949 [March 3, 1948], No. 6724/48. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXI] A tractor differential gear has a friction lock between two members of the differential train adapted to be actuated by fluid pressure from a source for operating a hydraulically controlled implement, such as a plough. As shown in Fig. 10, a multi-plate friction clutch 19 is provided between one half shaft 64 and the cage 61 of the differential which is driven by the usual pinion and crown wheel 60, 59. The clutch is adapted to be disengaged by a spring 20 and engaged by fluid pressure supplied to a piston 74. As shown in Fig. 1, the fluid-pressure to the clutch 19 is controlled by a valve 17 with a handle 52 in a branch pipe 14 from a supply pipe 15 to the main actuator 4 for raising and controlling the implement 3. The fluidpressure to actuator 4 is controlled by a valve 6 in a manner as described in Specification 470,069, [Group XXXI], and when this valve is closed the weight of the implement maintains the pressure in pipes 15 and 14 to keep the friction lock clutch 19 engaged. The valve 17 is operated when desired to exhaust the pressure fluid in the clutch actuating cylinder and free the differential. An alternative control arrangement may utilise a pressure accumulator as described in Specification 632,214, [Group I]. As applied to a layshaft type of differential in which the driven bevel gear shafts drive the half shafts through reduction gearing, the said bevel shafts are adapted to be connected by a single plate type of friction clutch which is operated by fluid pressure in a manner as described above. Alternatively in this type of differential the clutch may be arranged between the half shafts.
