Abstract
686,576. Gravity controlled liquid applying devices. JOCKERS, H. W. Jan. 29, 1951, No. 2209/51. Class 19. A liquid applying device comprises a casing having a main chamber and an auxiliary chamber, a valve passage communicating with said chambers, a valve controlling this passage, a discharge opening in the casing, a brush movable through the opening at the end of said valve and a weight within the main chamber having a flexible connection with the valve. The component parts are arranged so that a metered feed of the liquid is obtained. In the Figures a tubular casing has a body portion 1 closed at its lower end 2 and at its upper end by a casing section 3 so as to form a liquid receiving chamber 4. The inner end of the casing section is chambered as at 5 with the walls converging at 6 towards a passage 7 in a bushing 8 having a press fit in 3. The passage 7 merges into a discharge chamber 9 which leads to a discharge outlet 10. A rod 11 has near its outer end an annular groove 12 which forms valve portions 13 and 14 which have a working fit in the passage 7. A brush 15 is secured in the outer end of 11. The inner end of 11 has a portion of reduced diameter 16 to receive one end of a spring 17, the other end of which engages a reduced portion 18 of the rod 19 so that the rods 11 and 19 are connected by a flexible connection. The rod 19 is preferably of greater diameter or weight than that of the rod 11. The inner end of the rod 19 has an agitator 20 fixed to it. To prevent the brush from spreading during shipment a sleeve 22 is slipped over it. A cap 23 is in threaded engagement at 24 with the casing and seals the discharge outlet 10. When the cap is removed and the device is turned from the upright position in Fig. 1 to the inverted position as in Fig. 2 the weighted brush moves through the opening 10 and the valve rod 11 moves causing the valve ports 13 to advance in the passage 7. The groove 12 also advances thus permitting fluid to pass from 4 into the passage in restricted quantity and thence into the auxiliary chamber 9a. When the valve rod reaches the extent of its movement the spring 17 contacts the casing to limit the forward movement of the valve rod. When the casing is returned to an upright position the weighted brush is retracted within the casing. Specification 684,857 is referred to.
