Abstract

Blow-out preventer comprises (a) a body with a central bore through which a drilling pipe can stick and a plunger opening in its wall in >=1 side of the central bore and connected to it, (b) a plunger from the plunger opening, (c) a cap, releasably joined to the body, placed over the plunger opening for the reception of the plunger when this is moved to an open position outside the central opening, and a working cylinder connected to and movable with the cap and in which a piston with a piston rod is fitted, the rod extending through the cap to the plunger, (d) a fluid pressure device for the delivery of pressure fluid on each side of the piston for the control of its movements in order to regulate the movements of the plunger to or from a closed position in which the plunger extends into the central opening of the blow out preventer body, to an open position in which the central opening is not blocked and the plunger lies outside the plunger opening, (e) resistance device for the releasable connection of the body and the piston to counteract relative motion between these when the cap is uncoupled from the preventer body, so that the cap can be moved away from the body by the introduction of fluid pressure into the working cylinder on the outside face of the piston in order to release the plunger so that it can be removed from the blow-out preventer.
