Class 75(i) and 126 A liquid fuel burner laterally disposed in relation to its fuel tank 2 comprises a primary combustion chamber 5 having a controllable primary air inlet and in which combustion takes place at the free surface of the fuel, a secondary combustion chamber 25 arranged above the primary combustion chamber and having secondary air inlets 21, and a stack 29. The primary air inlet consists of a hit and miss valve bolted to the top of a lateral extension 8 of the primary combustion chamber and comprising three superposed plates 9, 12, 15, the fixed lower plate 9 'having a semi-circular opening, the rotatable middle plate 12 also having a semicircular opening and the rotatable upper plate 15 being semi-circular and perforated. A semi-tubular baffle 10 depends from the .fixed plate 9 into the extension 8, its convex surface facing the primary combustion chamber. The secondary combustion chamber 25 comprises an inverted bowl supported on a stand 24 on a ring 22 disposed around the open top of the primary combustion chamber. The secondary air inlets 21 are formed in the ring 22. The inverted bowl has a central aperture 26 covered by a flame guard 28 and surrounded by an annular bowl 37 in which at starting spirit is burned to cause a draught. The fuel in the primary combustion chamber is ignited by a piece of cotton waste on a hook on a bolt 19 securing the air control valve to the extension 8. The stack 29 surrounds the secondary combustion chamber and is provided at its upper end with a hinged damper and a flame guard and near its lower end with .tertiary air inlets.
